Challenge
Multiple client projects required LoRaWAN sensor nodes with slight variations — different sensors, different I/O counts, with and without GPS. Building one-off hardware for each was unsustainable. We needed a modular ecosystem that could cover the majority of use cases with minimal design changes per variant.
Solution
We designed the Tarangify base module around the RAK3172 (STM32WLE5 SoC), establishing a common schematic, footprint, and firmware base. Variants — T-LORA-N01 (standard), T-LORA-N01-GPS (with GNSS), T-LORA-N01-4CH (industrial I/O) — reuse the base layout and add application-specific circuits in defined expansion zones. A common AT-command and custom firmware layer works across all variants.
Outcome
In production across multiple client deployments. The modular approach reduced per-variant design time by over 60%. OTA firmware updates are supported on all units in the field.
