Challenge
The deployment environment had no guaranteed network — some sites had WiFi, some had only GSM, some had neither and relied on a LoRa gateway nearby. The unit also needed to monitor 3-phase power and integrate with a battery management system for backup power, all in a single ruggedised enclosure.
Solution
We designed a multi-radio control board using ESP32-S3 as the primary MCU, with WiFi built-in and external modules for A7672x GSM and LoRa. The firmware implements a network priority stack: WiFi first, GSM fallback, LoRa for low-bandwidth telemetry when neither is available. 3-phase power sensing uses precision current transformers with onboard ADC. BMS integration is via I2C.
Outcome
Shipped to production. The unit operates reliably across mixed-network deployment sites without any hardware changes between installations. Network failover is transparent to the cloud backend.
